http://www.skiutah.com/Skippress - IndexSkippress - US Vol. 7 No. 2 - IndexTo truly put the Utah conditions to the
test, I did something unusual. Instead of one
extended trip to check out the area resorts, I
decided on three separate ski excursions along
the Wasatch Front: one before Christmas, one
at the end of January and one more during
March. After hearing repeatedly from friends
about the prime consistency of Utah snow
(one friend even bragged about skiing on
the 4th of July) and rave reviews of the night
scene, I could hardly wait to experience it
for myself. I’ve tried early-season adventures

missing half my p-tex after bottoming out
on the barely covered stumps and rocks that
littered even high-elevation runs. And I’d

practically given up on spring skiing after
sloshing my way down the Slurpee-esque
slopes at a few “premium” resorts. I was
anxious to see if Utah could deliver on the
promise it had made during its Olympic debut
fi ve years ago. Utah did more than deliver. The
early December conditions were just as ideal
as late January’s. And while March is usually
when I start tuning up the mountain bike, I
could have sworn I’d just woken up on New
Year’s Day and stumbled knee-deep into the
thick of Winter. The numbers were ridiculous.
The ski reports on each trip revealed
double-digit inches of new snow at nearly
every resort—with fresh powder on more
mornings than not. As I made fi rst tracks one
particularly powdery morning, I couldn’t
help but wonder why there wasn’t a line
stretching back to the parking lot. Where was
everybody? Didn’t they know what they were
missing? Then I remembered seeing a ski map

and I realized that with so many resorts
sharing the bounty, crowds just weren’t an
issue. Or maybe they were all just recovering
from a long night out at one of the great night
spots around here.
Besides the consistency of the incredible
conditions, perhaps the most astonishing
thing was just how easy it was to get to Utah’s
famous snow. Hop on a morning fl ight from
just about anywhere in the country and you
can land yourself on the slopes before the day’s
half done. The effi cient Salt Lake City International
Airport has become a major western
hub, hosting more than 900 daily fl ights from
17 airlines. The best part? More than 150 hit
the tarmac before noon. No need to waste a
day just getting there.
