http://www.skiutah.com/Skippress - IndexSkippress - US Vol. 7 No. 2 - IndexWith shuttles, rental cars, taxis and any other
conceivable mode of transportation ready and
waiting to make the short trek up the mountain,
it’s perfectly reasonable to be staring
down the face of more than 3,000 vertical feet
of powder just after lunchtime. In fact, the trip
from the airport to the slopes is shorter than
most people’s daily commutes.
After one of my fi rst Utah runs, I stopped
for a chat with the lift operator. I needed a
rationalization, some sort of scientifi c reasoning
to explain how I’d just fl oated down the
mountain on a cushion of feathery whiteness.
Luckily, he knew his stuff. After a simple nod
and my “I’ve never felt anything like this”
mumble, the Utah pro launched into a full
meteorological discourse, charting the high
and low pressure regions, the storm paths and
the wind currents on the back of his ski glove.
It seems that every winter offers the perfect
powder storm along the Wasatch.
According to the seasoned liftie, when the
Western Jet Stream (a dry arctic air mass that
fl ows from the northwest) moves over the
warmer waters of the Great Salt Lake, the
lower levels of the atmosphere pick up
moisture and warmth from the lake. As it
continues moving toward the mountains,
the air cools and the moisture that it gathered
condenses, forming clouds (a weather
phenomenon described as the Lake Effect)
before crashing into Utah’s mountain ranges,
dropping a mass of the lightest, driest powder
you’ll fi nd anywhere. With an average annual
snowfall of more than 42 feet, it’s easy to see
how Utah maintains such superior consistency,
while all the resorts to the East have to settle
for the leftovers.
