BOSTON HAS NEW ENGLANDERS EVERYWHERE REVELING IN PERHAPS
THE LOCALS’ GREATEST YEARS IN SPORTS. WITH THE WORLD SERIES-SWEEPING
RED SOX LAYING CLAIM TO BASEBALL’S CROWN, THE NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS
BLOWING OPPONENTS OFF THE TURF AND BASKETBALL’S CELTICS SUDDENLY
RESURGENT, A NAME CHANGE FROM BEANTOWN TO TITLETOWN MAY BE IN THE
CARDS. BUT IF IT’S CHAMPIONSHIP SKIING YOU WANT, TURN LEFT AT FENWAY
PARK AND HEAD NORTH TO THE WHITE GLADES, BUFFED GROOMS AND BIG
BUMPS OF VERMONT.
Vermont: New England winter’s winner and champeen.
Since the fi rst scent of snow, skiers and riders have dreamed of rosy-cheeked days
and cozy nights amidst the wooded hills and picture-book towns that make white
magic in the Green Mountains. Here are a few examples of Vermont’s winning ways:
Okemo: The Ultimate Playing Field
You know that feeling of running on just-cut grass or getting the fi rst slice of cake? More
trails than ever are like that at Okemo Mountain Resort. New snowmaking, new grooming
machines and an overall commitment to on-piste excellence make skiing Okemo feel like
you’re holding your own personal ribbon-cutting ceremony on each turn.
A family-friendly atmosphere means that home-fi eld feeling applies to every member of
your personal ski and snowboard team — whether that’s in the newly redone baselodge,
the new slopeside lodging at the just-opened Bixby House at Jackson Gore, or in the pipes
and parks where Olympic halfpipe medalist Ross Powers has been named offi cial Snowboard
Ambassador. A friendly guy with a welcoming smile and a bag of halfpipe tricks that
wowed the world, Powers could be your intro to the world of the pipe.
Jay Peak: The Skier’s Hill
Jay Peak made a big buzz this fall with an ad campaign gently mocking the well-heeled
breed of skiers that goes to ski towns for entertainment other than the slopes. Like
this: “My favorite part of skiing? Why, the surf ’n’ turf
buffet, of course!”
Jay’s point: when you’ve got a sweet tram, the most
butt-kicking glades and a frontside section of rock-strewn
chutes and trails called The Face, why promote yourself as
anything less than bad-ass?
The East’s hardcore hill begins some big-league developments
around the Tram Base Lodge and Skier Services
Center this year to provide additional slopeside lodging units,
access to new repair and demo facilities and new pub and
restaurant options. And, for hard-charging collegiate skiers,
there’s a Triple Major Season Pass with unlimited access to
Jay, Bolton and Mad River Glen.
