THE BEST SKI VACATIONS
Classic
IN THE WORLD
Alta Peruvian Lodge, Alta, Utah
Those in the know pronounce it Al-Tuh (for Alf Engen). Those in the know also stay at the Peruvian Lodge,
where the hearth and heart of American powder skiing has lived for more than 50 years.
A Mecca for soft-snow searchers, beloved ski chalet of migrating mountain families, ski dorm, honeymoon
hotel and alpine abbey for two-boarding bros, the Peruvian epitomizes the cozily cloistered community of
skiers come in from the cold.
With no TVs in the rooms (which range from suite to simple with the bathroom down the hall), everyone
gathers around the lobby fi replace to play cards, Monopoly or cribbage.
The breathtaking beauty of Mount Superior seems ready to burst through the expansive glass in the dining
room, where elk medallions and buffalo steak pepper an impeccable menu. To emphasize its ski-lodge chic,
there’s a movie every Saturday night in the Alf Engen Room, endless powder-day replays outside in the heated
pool, and, upstairs, plenty of real-life locals who hang out at the bar.
Oh, and the most famous snow in the world is waiting right outside your door.

Tamarack Lodge,
Mammoth, California
Despite Intrawest’s best efforts, funky is still a word that
comes to mind in Mammoth. And there’s no place funkier
than Tamarack Lodge & Resort. A short drive around the
backside of the mountain, Tamarack is technically a crosscountry
resort. But for my money, its, well, funky cabins,
with their Early Forest Service architecture, are the only
place to stay in Mammoth.
The lodge offers great dining, the cabins range from rustic
to neo-rustic, the setting on Twin Lakes is both stunning
and off the beaten path, and there’s nothing like a moonlight
skinny ski after a day on the slopes.
