H
I’m one of those skiers who leaves the house
reluctantly, double-checking that the front door
is locked, unplugging the toaster and coffee
machine. But once I’m actually out there — on
the road, the chair or at the airport — it’s hard
to get me home again.
The open-ended adventure of travel that’s so
integral to this sport is pretty intoxicating once
you give yourself over to it. There are open highways
to ride, mountain-bound planes to catch
and the kinds of random, real-life experiences
that can never be recreated in any video game.
“Boys, when you get there,
they’ll still be skiing.”
My favorite mountain memories often have more
to do with those moments in transit than any
single set of deep powder turns. Like driving over
Loveland Pass as a kid when the fl oorboards on
the family Volkswagen had rusted out. As the
snow came in off the road, my brother and I
fl oated gum-wrapper boats in the footwell’s rapidly
forming ponds.
Or in college, when fi ve of us took 34 hours to
drive from New York to Jackson Hole, rotating
behind the wheel so that the tank of gas you
bought was the tank of gas you burned.
I’d like to thank the cop who pulled us over and
only issued the statement, “Boys, when you get
there, they’ll still be skiing.”
I’d like to think that this winter will bring starry
fl ights, when we drop down through the clouds
and land in a blizzard, the snowfl akes crowding
against the glass like old friends at the door with
a bottle of wine.
I’d like to think that there will be more helicopter
rides with the pilot cranking Stairway to Heaven,
lifting up into a beautiful blue sky like my own
ski movie just begun.
I’d like to think this issue of Ski Press will fi ll you
with as much inspiration that we felt writing it,
and help you cook up the kind of snow adventure
that you just can’t get at home.
