Taos, NEW
THERE ARE TWO WAYS TO TAKE A SKI VACATION — LIKE THE PASHA OF POWDER WITH ALL THE
ATTENDANT PRIVILEGES, OR ON THE DOWN LOW, PINCHING PENNIES FOR HOT WINGS AND
COLD PBRs. HERE WE TAKE A LOOK AT ONE OF SKIING’S CLASSICS, WHERE THE BEST OF BOTH
SUPER-STYLE AND SKID-ROW SKIDOM CAN BE HAD IN TAOS, NEW MEXICO.
LODGING
Steep: Edelweiss Lodge and Spa with a bistro, bar,
ski valet and slopeside convenience with all the
amenities for $225 to $1,240 per night depending
on your room or condo needs.
Cheap: The Quality Inn. As low as $65 per night,
hot breakfast included.
SKIING
Steep: $63 single day high season.
Cheap: $35 from 11/22 to 12/14/07.
BREAKFAST
Steep: The Taos Inn just off the Taos Plaza serves
awesome Eggs Benedict for around $7.
Cheap: The Burrito Guy. Look for the guy with the
Rubbermaid cooler full of $2 green chile burritos.
DINNER
Steep: Sabroso’s in Arroyo Seco fl ies in Maine lobsters
on Friday nights. Expect to pay market price, and
bring plastic if you want to add a bottle of Cristal.
Cheap: The Guadalajara Grill serves a huge pork
Burrito Grande with chile for $3.50 that lasts most
people two meals, as well as beer and margaritas.
BAR
Steep: The Anaconda Bar at the El Monte Sagrado,
where they serve $9 martinis, shaken or stirred.
Keep your eyes peeled for Julia, Oprah and other
biggies.
Cheap: Alley Cantina. The Alley has awesome
entertainment and $2 Buds. How can you go
wrong?
CAN’T MISS
Steep: Hot Air Balloon through the Rio Grande
Gorge. At $225 per person, it’s not for the average
Joe, but floating in amongst the cliffs is
unforgettable.
Cheap: Hot Springs along the Rio Grande Gorge.
If you can find them, they’re free and you may
even get a bonus if there are other ski bums
soaking nude.
