My wife thinks I have a learning disability. “How
is it,” she asks, “that someone who writes about
skis, tests skis and spends half their life on skis, can’t
wait to touch those same skis inside a store?”
I tell her that I’m hoping for superpowers. That
looking at a wall of skis is like looking at a collection
of capes that will give me abilities I never
had before. I’m trying to decide which pair will
let me fl y like a rocket down the groomed, which
pair will let me grip sheer steep faces with a
lizard’s grasp, and which pair will let me hold the
ice with such prehensile control that I feel as if I
can glide on frozen water.
“The technology race outpaces NASA,” I say.
“And…
“And?’” she says.
“And, I like the new colors.”
I don’t remind her that I’m the second brother.
That I got hand-me-down skis until I was 12 and
that my fi rst new skis, wrapped in plastic-covered
topsheets with clean, un-drilled bases made me

feel as if I had escaped some kind of alpine
depression, as if the future of gravity was mine
to hold. That just to hold them made me dream
of possibilities: of blue skis, white slopes and
sunshine that shimmers like burnished gold.
“I’m hoping
for superpowers.”
Instead, I buy her brand new skis of her own. And
I watch as she unwraps them (in a box as tall as
her, what else could they be?), and how her
green eyes light up as she stands on them in bare
feet and fl exes them into the carpeted fl oor.
When she fi nally skis them, when her long red
hair is fl ying like a national fl ag in the wind, I
can’t wait to ask her what it is that she likes best
about them. Is it the way they carve, the way
they’re so quick in the turn, or just how pretty
they look in the snow?
She smiles. “What I like best is that they’re mine.”
